Christ the King CYO Track & Field
Welcome! We are a CYO track program for second through eighth grade athletes in the Pleasant Hill/Martinez/Walnut Creek area. Out team combines boys and girls from the Christ the King, St. Catherine, and St. Stephen parishes. We compete in the Diablo Valley Catholic League, which is Section 1 of the Oakland Diocese.
Our practice season begins in February, and meets take place on Saturdays from March through early May. Signups are held in January. Elementary and middle-school athletes living within the boundaries of the three parishes, or who attend the school or religious education programs are eligible to participate on our team.
Practices are held on weekday the evenings starting at 5:00 and never running later than 6:30. Meets begin in March, starting with a "mini-meet" held to instruct our many parent volunteers. A typical meet includes the following individual running events:
- 50m dash (5th grade and under only)
- 100m dash
- 200m
- 400m
- 800m
- 1600m
Team running events are all relays:
- 4x100m
- 4x400m
- "Sprint Medley" (100m, 100m, 200m, 400m)
We compete in the following field events:
- Softball throw
- Long jump
- Shotput (5th grade and older)
- High jump (5th grade and older)
Newcomers may want to read the how a meet works page.
Practice Starts Soon
Our first team practice is coming up on Thursday, February 2 at 5pm,
at College Park High School track in Pleasant Hill. Park in the large lot,
walk around (not over!) the fence: the track is at the end of the drive that
runs next to the baseball field.

If your athlete is not fully registered, an adult must stay at practice the entire time. Bring a book and a blanket: you'll find the College Park bleachers very accomodating.
We could still use coaches, especially primary and assistant coaches for the "middle grades" (4-5-6) for girls and boys. All workouts are planned in advance, and the best thing you can bring to the table as a coach is a willingness to help each athlete have fun. Middle grades are where we start emphasizing good running form and (for fifth grade and up) start offering more advanced field events like high jump and shot put.
Primary coaches and assistants need to
complete the
volunteer form, and attend a team coach meeting this Thursday January
26th, 6:30pm in room 222 at Christ the King, the same room where we held
signups.
Primary coaches also must attend mandatory Diocese-run meeting and
fingerprint session in
March. Here
is the PDF flyer for the 2012 session. Your $5 workshop fee will be covered by the team.
Late Signups
We still accept late signups at the parent meeting on Monday, February 6th, 6:45pm in the Christ the King Parish Hall
Sweatshirts
This season, we're offering sweatshirts for the team, as a gentle reminder
that those early practices and meets can be cold. (And if you were at
the Diocese meet last year, you know it can be cold in May, too.) Here's
a (virtual) sample. Purchasing a sweatshirt is
optional. The team t-shirt is our uniform, and is the only required
piece of equipment you need to purchase from the team.
This design will be silk-screened onto heavyweight ash-gray pullover hoodies. Special thanks to Trish Heaney (aka "Coach Trish") for making the design. Sweatshirts will be offered this year at $30, just slightly above cost. Show your team spirit and keep warm at the same time!
